Bible Reading

Luke 6:46-49

“Why do you call me 'Lord, Lord,' and not do what I tell you? Everyone who comes to me and hears my words and does them, I will show you what he is like: he is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when a flood arose, the stream broke against that house and could not shake it, because it had been well built. But the one who hears and does not do them is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. When the stream broke against it, immediately it fell, and the ruin of that house was great.”

[36:47]

Matthew 11:28-30

“Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

[01:02:10]

James 1:5

“If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.”

[40:27]

Observation questions

  1. In Luke 6:46–49, what do the two builders have in common, and what differences in their actions become clear when the flood comes? [36:53]
  2. What three things can keep believers from doing what Jesus asks, and how does confession help bring each one into the open? [43:01]
  3. In James 1:5, what is someone who lacks wisdom invited to do? What does God’s willingness to give wisdom reveal about how he treats those who ask? [40:32]
  4. In Matthew 11:28–30, how does Jesus describe his character? What does he invite burdened people to receive and learn from him? [01:02:24]

Interpretation questions

  1. How does the picture of building a foundation in Luke 6 help explain why discipleship involves practice rather than simply knowing Christian beliefs? [38:28]
  2. What difference would it make for a believer to obey Jesus because his way is trustworthy, rather than to avoid punishment or earn salvation? How might those different motives affect a difficult decision? [44:25]
  3. How can a believer distinguish Christ’s correction, which opens a better way forward, from an accusing voice that only repeats past failures? How does Jesus’ character in Matthew 11:29 help with that distinction? [56:14]
  4. Why is Jesus’ promise of rest in Matthew 11:28–30 not the same as a promise of an easy life? How can belonging to a good master bring rest while obedience still involves sacrifice? [01:03:06]

Application questions

  1. Where in your daily life is there a gap between knowing what Jesus asks and putting it into practice? What small step of obedience could you take this week? [49:24]
  2. Think of something you are finding difficult to obey. Is the main obstacle uncertainty, fear, stubbornness, or a mixture of these? What would it look like to name that honestly before God and ask for the help you need? [43:07]
  3. Is there a conversation or relationship where you are tempted to enjoy gossip, a cutting remark, or putting someone down? What could you say or do instead that would help you discover the pleasure of encouraging that person? [46:27]
  4. Growth in Christ often happens little by little. Where can you see a small sign of his work in your life? What simple rhythm of Scripture, prayer, or fellowship could help you keep growing without turning it into another measure of your worth? [52:47]
  5. Who might welcome a practical act of kindness or a thoughtful check-in from you this week? How could you naturally and respectfully explain that Jesus’ love is part of what moves you to care? [59:44]
  6. What demand is weighing heavily on you right now—perhaps approval, success, control, or keeping everyone happy? What might trusting Jesus as your good master change about how you carry that responsibility, even if the circumstances remain difficult? [01:03:31]
